Strong family ties and proximity to nature are the main reasons why residents stay in Ústí nad Labem.

Most people are also satisfied with the condition of their apartment or house. In contrast, the city center is viewed negatively. These findings come from a large survey of Ústí residents, in which 1,411 respondents participated.

The survey was conducted in June of this year and revealed that the main ties residents have to the city are family ties (72%) and the nearby natural surroundings (38%). People are also largely satisfied with their homes—63% of respondents have no specific issues with the condition of their apartment or house. The most satisfied groups are seniors over 65 (66%) and young people aged 15–26 (56%).

It should be noted, however, that nearly half of the respondents—specifically 47%—are dissatisfied with life in the city. The main reasons for dissatisfaction with the city as a whole include cleanliness (or lack thereof) (39%) and socially maladjusted citizens (26%).  The results also showed that 71% of residents have at some point considered moving away. The most frequently cited reasons were the composition of the population (22%), safety and crime (18%), and infrastructure and urban development (15%).

This contrasts with the responses directly related to housing. A total of 63% of respondents have no specific problems with the condition of their apartment or house, and only 11% are bothered by the small size of their living space. And while the apartments and houses themselves are in good condition, 73% of residents are bothered by their surroundings. They perceive disorder in their neighborhood (43%), a sense of danger, and noise as the biggest problems.

Another problematic issue is the housing market. According to 40% of respondents, the housing supply is insufficient, mainly due to a lack of new construction (25%), high prices (20%), and poor affordability for young people (18%).

According to 36% of respondents, finding rental housing is difficult, mainly due to high rents (25%) and insufficient supply and security deposits (both 8%). The greatest demand is for 3+1 and 3+kk apartments (54%).

The survey revealed that the city center is the most criticized part of the city; the vast majority of people (72%) would not choose it as their place of residence. The main advantage, which is the availability of services (37%), fails to outweigh the negatives. These negatives primarily include concerns about safety and the composition of the population (39%), noise (31%), and disorder (24%). As one typical response summarized: “Everything is close by, but I don’t want to live there because of the disturbance of peace and noise.”

Thank you all very much for completing the survey. The results will serve as a valuable source of information and feedback as we implement our city’s development policy.
